Jennifer Bohlander is a painter who tattoos. She owns Matryoshka in NOTO, and along with her husband, The Wheel Barrel. If you unfamiliar with her day to day work, you may be familiar with the public murals recently painted in NOTO. Jennifer grew up in Illinois and Ohio, eventually joining the Army as a Russian Linguist. As fate would have it, she landed in Kansas and has made it her home for the past 25 years.
The majority of artwork Jennifer produces is an expression of living things interacting with their environment or community. Jennifer also prefers to paint in oil on wood, creating a relationship between the subject and organic matter but has many works in many different mediums and environments. Her work can be found in several collections around the country.
My name is Jennifer Bohlander and I am passionate about the body art industry and the world of art and artists. I have been tattooing for over 20 years and painting my entire life. Being blessed to have a creative outlet is extremely important to me and even though I do it for other reasons, I have been humbled to have won awards for my work over the years. Before becoming a tattoo artist, I was a Russian linguist in the U.S. Army. Studying the Russian language and culture brought me an appreciation of different world perspectives and approaches to art. My vision of how to bring this passion to others has resulted in Matryoshka.
Matryoshka represents all that I find beautiful about differences in people and how what you see on the surface may not be the whole story. Each layer is an expression of individuality and experience. Within these walls I hope you will feel appreciated for however you choose to express yourself, and be encouraged to discover what is inside of you.
Thank you,
Jennifer
